It is God’s will that you should be sanctified; that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honourable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no-one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sin, as we have already told you and warned you. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you His Holy Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7
At rubies we are continually seeking how to spur each other on to live up to God’s standard for our lives in every way, the world is continually giving us alternatives and grey areas that give us comfort , but that keep us far from God’s mark. Purity is an area where these lines keep being blurred and we find ourselves often looking for how close we can get to the cliff edge , but still be in the “get into heaven ” zone. Lets dissect the scripture above and see what guidelines lie therein for today’s woman.
It Is God’s will. A common phrase in Christian circles is “i am seeking God’s will”. My husband likes to say , we are often looking for some profound mystical, or unique to the individual will of God, but are not obeying the ones he has expressly and very clearly already outlined in His word. So today here is one of God’s wills for your life – that you should avoid sexual immorality. The way the statement is phrased covers everything you hear ( what stories are you listening to from your friends, what talk shows are you listening to, what songs are you listening to), see ( what are you reading, what are you watching), touch ( can you lift up holy hands), speak ( what, how and to whom are you speaking).
As I said above we love to seek grey areas, and so as we ask ourselves the above question, what may come to mind is hard-core porn, adultery and prostitution. But else where the word of God warns us that there should not be even a “hint”, of sexual immorality among the people of God. what would that look like in everyday life. Are you flirting with someone who is not your spouse (yes single lady this is for you too), are you getting emotional or physical gratification from someone who is not your spouse? The shows we watch and avidly follow, have they cheapened what God meant when He created Sex and in the process made us dull to the higher standard He has called us to, making it easy for us to compromise?
The passage goes on to say that we need to LEARN, how to control our bodies, in a God Glorifying manner. God Knows that temptations will come, that we will be faced with situations that will call on us to make a choice. So He calls us to learn, to teach ourselves how to walk in self – control. And then there is a God glorifying manner in which it is to be done. we cannot excuse hints of impurity for being better than going all out in adultery and fornication. For how then will there be a difference between the children of God and the heathen if there is no clear demarcation in how we handle ourselves. Research has shown that christian youth have just as much sex outside of marriage as non believing youth, the only difference being that they tend to stick to one partner. Adultery is sadly not uncommon in the church as well.
When God says it is His will about something, it means He has also along with it provided the how. He has given us His Holy spirit who guides us into all truth. He has given us His word, to read and obey, that we may live. He has given us prayer, through which we can commune with Him, He has given us fellowship through which we can spur each other on to good works, and warn each other lest we fall, and when we do, to pick each other up.
One more thing to pick out.” …and that in this matter no-one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him.” In the wake of the “me too” movement, this verse becomes quiet relevant. May it not be heard among us that we have taken advantage of anyone sexually. To the woman who has faced sexual abuse in any form, here is one of many verses that speak to God’s hatred of what happened to you. He will heal and restore you, He will meet that deep need within you that only you and He can understand. And vengeance is His.
whether it be physically or emotionally, may we treat everyone with the highest standard of purity. Let us honour ourselves and others, and above all God who gave us the gift and joy of purity.
This is a topic that encompasses so much more, and I will revisit it soon. For today, let us asses ourselves on how much we have obeyed God in His will, that we may live lives of Purity. God bless you as you look to become a far more than rubies woman.
